YAFFO STREET’S EMPTY. There are only two other people on the minibus to Tel Aviv. One’s an Israeli girl near my age wearing a bikini and a towel around her waist. The other is an old man. He smells like sardines and holds a briefcase on his lap.

“Where you heading?” the girl asks.

“Habima Theatre,” I say. “You?”

“The beach.”

Quite a day to go swimming I want to say, but who am I to say what a good day is for a dip in the sea? With all this security, it’s probably one of the safest days to be outside. On the radio, Israeli songs are played to embolden us. Naomi Shemer wails “Jerusalem of Gold,” “Yerushalayim shel Zahav,” one of my favourites as a kid.
